Sean E Depp speaks on punk music & names favorite punk bands…
Sean E Depp’s new record is an upbeat, concise ten track project called ‘PunkRapOi!‘. For the album, Sean uses Punk Rock influences, sonics, and song structure. So it’s punk-y, but its still Hip Hop more or less. Within the heavy guitar driven tracks and distortion laced synths, you’ll still find beats, rapping, what have you…
He calls it PunkRap, and began work on the project in late 2010, recording an early version of the album track ‘Dude Rap’. From there Sean crafted the ideas into tracks between projects and the PunkRapOi! record was recorded punk style pretty much as fast as possible over a few days while drinking a lot of cheap canned beer.
We asked Sean a few questions about it:

SM: What kind of music did you grow up listening to, aside from hip hop?
Sean E Depp: Basically a lot of Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash, Suicidal Tendencies, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Dead Kennedys…you know? That kinda stuff really.
SM: What drew you towards the Punk/Rap sound for your new project?
Sean E Depp: [I've Been] listening to a lot of stuff like The Insaints, Flogging Molly, Blood and Whiskey… plus, Punk has always had the same, you know, loud type of aggression…which is the thing that made hip hop appeal to me early on.
SM: In one sentence, where do Punk Rock and Hip Hop meet musically or otherwise?
Sean E Depp: Punk rock and hip hop are both a voice for the disenfranchised youth!…the musical voice, of the disenfranchised youth…
